India's pulse imports rose from about 25 lakh tonnes in 2020-21 (demand 277 lakh tonnes vs production 254 lakh tonnes) to 73 lakh tonnes by 2024-25, with import spending nearly quadrupling from ₹11,937 crore to ₹46,428 crore, even though India is the world's largest producer of pulses.

“2020-21 में दालों की घरेलू मांग 277 लाख टन थी और उस वक्त हमारा उत्पादन 254 लाख टन था... 2024-25 तक दालों का आयात 73 लाख टन तक पहुंच गया। दालों के आयात पर साल 2020-21 में भारत ने 11,937 करोड़ खर्च किए थे जो अगले 5 वर्षों में करीब चार गुना बढ़कर 46,428 करोड़ तक पहुंच गया।”
